The
repair of Venetian mirror is an exacting process. Once a design has
been selected, a master craftsmen cuts the glass into intricate pieces. The edges of these pieces are first carefully ground for a precise fit, then beveled
on a grinding wheel to form a sleek decorative angle. Great skill is
required to keep all the beveled edges smooth and uniform. The bevels are
then polished on a succession of wheels; first of stone, then cork, and felt
which is wet with jewelers' rouge. This gives the glass its bright
finish. Once the shaping and beveling are complete, engraving designs are
outlined onto the glass surface. Using a small grinding wheel to cut into
the underside of the glass, the artisan engraves fine decorative lines and deep
circles and ovals called "pontes". On some pieces, the surface
edge is "beaded": it is scalloped down its length, engraved to look like
a chain of sparkling beads.
